“With the installation of SP Polyurethane flooring in our main hall, Sport & Play provided us with the highest quality of workmanship. Their professionalism, coupled with the low maintenance and long-lifespan of the flooring installed, ensures that the centre’s latest refurbishment will benefit the whole community for years to come.”
Sport & Play’s fast turnaround and thorough installation allowed us to offer a wide variety of sports upon our long-awaited reopening to the public.
In May 2021, Sport & Play were tasked with installing new SP Polyurethane Pulastic sports flooring at The Stour Centre in Kent. Hailed as a “flag-ship facility” under the management of Freedom Leisure, a not-for-profit leisure trust running over 100 sites in the U.K, Sport & Play fitted the new flooring in the centre’s main sports hall. With the installation of this new durable, multi-purpose synthetic floor, the centre’s hall is now able to host a wide range of non-sporting and sporting activities.
Our Work:
Undertaken as part of a year-long extensive refurbishment of The Stour Centre, Sport & Play were able to identify the issues with the previous flooring at the facility, offering their professional opinion and expertise. The older floor had consisted of vinyl over Granwood flooring, causing issues such as the vinyl flattening out in areas, as well as the vinyl seams splitting where they had been heat welded together. These issues contributed to inconsistencies in the bounce and feel of the floor, making the hall unsuitable for the activities Freedom Leisure sought to offer.
Based on these issues, Sport & Play recommended that SP Polyurethane flooring – more commonly known through its Pulastic brand name – would be the best fit for the main sports hall. Available in several variations, its versatility allows a vast range of sports to be played on the surface – including but not limited to football, badminton and gymnastics – as well as being able to accommodate other non-sporting events. The durability of the floor allows it to withstand wear and tear associated with non-sporting activities, with the seamless flooring being able to last up 20 years with minimal maintenance, making it extremely cost effective when compared with other alternatives.
In addition to the installation of the Pulastic sports floor, Sport & Play also installed Sports Wall dividers in The Stour Centre’s main hall. These lightweight yet heavy-duty partitions enable a large hall space to be split into separate areas.
The Result:
Based on Sport & Play’s recommendation, S&P and Freedom Leisure agreed together to the installation of the new SP Polyurethane flooring. The work was able to be carried out over several days, with the expertise of the team ensuring the floor was installed using the proper procedure; to ensure its full longevity can be achieved. This quick turnaround ensured the main hall was ready to welcome back customers as soon as the refurbished centre was opened at the beginning of June, delighting Graham Graham Watson, Group Facilities and Environmental Manager for Freedom Leisure.
